History Major Standing.
During the early modern era (c. 1400-1700) European explorers, colonizers, and missionaries encountered, and wrote about, much of the world, from Asia and Africa to the Americas. In this course we will read many of those valuable but problematic sources and determine what they can tell us about the Europeans who wrote them and the non-Europeans they encountered. The first half of the class will include case studies on voyagers to central Africa, India, Brazil, and both Eastern and Western North America, while in the second half students will complete their own projects on a subject of their choice.
