This intellectual history course charts the adventure of French ideas from 1940s existentialism to what became known around the world during the 1970s-1990s as post-structuralism and postmodernism. At issue is the status of man as a figure of Western thought. Following attempts to refound humanism in the wake of the Second World War, the figure of the human subject was intensely criticized by structuralists, anti-colonialists, feminists, and others. Thinkers examined include Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Claude Levi-Strauss, Frantz Fanon, Aim Csaire, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Jean-Franois Lyotard, and Jean Baudrillard. Is our future post-humanist?
