The French New Wave film movement of the 1950s and 1960s revolutionized movies around the world. Its experimental, playful style emphasized absurdity and youth, and its spirit anticipated the famous student/worker revolts of May 1968, when the government almost collapsed. During the 1970s, French film became more explicitly political as it grappled with social upheaval, the sexual revolution, and movements such as feminism. This course in film history will present the work of directors from Franois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard to Chantal Akerman and Agns Varda. Students will create their own films over the course of the semester.
