All readings in English translation. Introduction to the literary canons of East Asia through selected masterworks of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literatures. We will learn how to interpret the meaning of each piece and to appreciate its unique artistry. The historical contexts, cultural values, and aesthetics of these masterpieces will also be discussed. Readings include classical Chinese poetry and short stories, <i>Tale of Genji</i>, and Korean fiction.
