This course considers painting, sculpture, architecture and urban development in seventeenth-century Italy. During this period known as the Baroque, Rome was both the capital of the Roman Catholic Church and the center of the European art world. The city formed the stage on which Baroque art and architecture was created through the ingenuity of artists like Artemisia Gentileschi, Caravaggio, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and the ambitions of their patrons who commissioned art to express something about themselves and their beliefs. We study how the visual arts in Baroque Italy communicated ideas about society, religion, politics, culture and identity.
