Do robots have souls? Probably not. But this course thinks its a good question, and therefore explores our fundamental thinking of technology and the ways in which it overlaps with religious and philosophical thinking of animal, inanimate object, technical object, and human. The philosophic core is found in the work of Gilbert Simondon, Martin Heidegger, and Nishida Kitaro, focusing particularly on Simondons re-envisioning of the relationship between religion and technology through art and philosophy. After this core, we turn to art, movies, and novels, to explore transhumanism, posthumanism, the threat of AI, and the possibility of human and
machine harmony.
