GERM2012 · German Studies
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
Imaginative fairy tales, monstrous spiders, magic snakes, soulless robots, psychological demons the German literary tradition has a long legacy of fantastic tales that probe the limits of human imagination and inventiveness. Reading key poems, short stories, and novellas, students investigate this topic with an eye toward understanding how the literary chimeras of the mind reflect cultural, social, historical, and political anxieties. What does the fantastic tell us about ourselves? The ultimate aim is advanced (autonomous) reading competency in German, using a broad spectrum of creative exercises, assignments, and projects, both inside and outside the classroom.
