Note to Journalism minors only: This course satisfies the requirement for an elective with "critical" orientation.Washington gets all the attention, but local politics are the beating heart of American democracy. From school board and mayoral contests to state legislative and gubernatorial campaigns, local races often carry the highest stakes, because the outcomes tangibly affect peoples lives. For journalists, down-ballot elections offer unique considerations and opportunities. With 2025 mayoral elections in Greater Boston as a backdrop, this course will examine the ethics, traditions, and practices of local campaign journalism. The class will take a critical look at reporting past and present and give students an on-the-ground feel for what it takes to be practitioners themselves.
