This course details how models for different natural hazards are created, how models of human risk due to those natural hazards are created, and how those hazard and risk models are combined to obtain loss scenarios from natural hazards. The natural hazards to be examined include earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, wind storms and forest fires. Other natural hazards such as sea-level rise and volcanic eruptions will be mentioned. The FEMA program HAZUS, which provides standardized tools and data for estimating risk from earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and hurricanes, will be utilized in the course. This course is designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. First-year calculus is a prerequisite for the course.
