ENGL3824 · English
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
This course studies the lives and literature of two seventeenth-century American women both known to their cultures as "The Tenth Muse" -- Anne Bradstreet & Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz. Bradstreet from Massachusetts & Cruz from Mexico City wrote poetry on far-ranging topics: early modern science, world politics & history, cultural critiques, philosophical meditations, love poems, funeral elegies, and more. While Bradstreet largely wrote poetry, Cruz also authored several plays, musical compositions, and contributed to several different bodies of knowledge in Spain & New Spain. Both women addressed the patriarchal gatekeepers who would circumscribe their lives & literary output due to their gender -- Cruz boldly & with humor inYou Foolish Men, and Bradstreet with subtlety in the Prologue to her book. By studying their lives, and appreciating their contrasting approaches to life & literature, we will better understand the place of women in the colonies, who wrote for readers on both sides of the Atlantic. Fulfills pre-1700.
