Ireland has always been known for its writers, but more often than not, those famous writers have exclusively been men. This class seeks to remedy the gender disparity in the study of Irish culture and introduce you to a number of important works written by and about Irish women between 1600 and 1900. Studying these texts will guide us to reconsider literary movements like the rise of the novel, the Gothic genre, and Romanticism, as well as historical events like the Rebellion of 1798 and the Famine, from a woman's perspective. Our readings will take on other issues too: authorship, canonization, fashion, domesticity, myth, spirituality, sexuality, the body, nationalism, and postcolonial critique. Irish women experienced, narrated, and symbolized it all. Our primary authors will be Maria Edgeworth, Lady Morgan, Eibhlin Dubh Ni Chonaill, Lady Wilde, Lady Gregory, and Emily Lawless.
