About this course

This course is major restricted to Political Science juniors and Political Science seniors and it is desirable for students to have taken a course previously in comparative politics and/or relating to the Middle East. A significant focus will be on analyzing whether ethnic conflict serves as a primary driver of civil war. Through detailed case studies such as the Lebanese Civil War, the Syrian Civil War, the Iraqi Civil War, and the ongoing conflict in Sudan, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the regions tumultuous history. By the end of the course, students will have a nuanced understanding of the factors driving civil wars and ethnic conflicts in the Middle East and the role of international actors in these conflicts.
