HIST4047 · History
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
Fulfills the LAMA requirement for History Majors and Minors. This course explores modern Chinese history (late 19th century to the present) through the lens of photography. From early colonial images to the rise of photography as a political tool during the Republican and Communist eras, and finally, to contemporary visual culture, we will analyze how photography has captured and shaped China's social, political, and cultural transformations. Through critical engagement with photographic archives, we will study key events, figures, and movements, examining how images provide both documentation and ideological narratives of China's modern era.
