This course engages theoretical and empirical writings from sociologists as well as scholars in urban studies/urban planning, environmental psychology, and critical human geography who examine and explore the relations between people, place, and environment in contemporary spatial thought. The course will cover multi-scalar topics such as place attachment, placemaking/citymaking, global political economy, spatial inequality, uneven development, localized spatial politics, and community engaged research. Discussions will focus on the sociohistorical and political processes that shapeand are shaped byspace and place, and their intersections with individual meaning-making and social identities.
