ITAL5586 · Romance Languages and Literatures
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
Conducted in Italian. What does it mean to be oneself? This course examines the intriguing question of selfhood from the Middle Ages to the present through literary texts such as confessions, letters, autobiographies, and autofiction, alongside visual arts that intersect with these narratives. By exploring self-representation across disciplines, we will analyze which aspects of personal experience are depicted, why they are chosen, and how first-person perspectives shape genres. The course also studies rhetorical devices and the interplay between individual experiences and cultural, social, and political contexts. Ultimately, it investigates how these works contribute to the construction of Western notions of individuality, offering insights into the evolving concept of self over time.
