This course will explore the investigations into mysticism and religious experience more broadly at the turn to the twentieth century. Our aim will be to understand the various motivations for and methods of these investigations. This will also raise questions about the nature of knowledge and the relationship between faith and reason. Along with other shorter readings, including by mystics themselves, the main thinkers and texts for the course will be William James, Varieties of Religious Experience, Sigmund Freud, The Future of Illusion, and writings by Joseph Marchal, SJ. Satisfies the following distribution requirement(s) for Philosophy: Modern, Knowledge & Reality, History of Philosophy.
