THEO7061 · Theology
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
This seminar explores the thought of Ren Girard and its ongoing reception in Christian Theology. Among the most incisive (and at times controversial) thinkers of the 20th and early 21st centuries, Girard's interdisciplinary studies on human desire, conflict, and the possibility of reconciliation remains generative for those working in a variety of fields, including theology. After an overview of Girard's central texts, the seminar proceeds by examiningkey interpreters and critics of Girard, including Hans Urs von Balthasar, Raymund Schwager, James Alison, John Milbank, Sarah Coakley, and S. Mark Heim.
