About this course

In this comparative study of immigration and education, students willexplore theories and scholarship of immigration, learn about cases from the U.S. and Ireland, and engage in collaborative inquiry about how educational contexts in Dublin support newcomers.Given global migration patterns, Dublin is an ideal site for our course given a rich historical context as well as contemporary immigration which has transformed the demographics of the city and nation. Recent influxes of migrants from Syria and Ukraine, as well as longstanding pathways for migrants from various parts of Africa have reshaped the culture, politics and identity of the city. As a result, tensions about the welcome and integration of newcomers have led to polarizing discourses and anti-immigrant sentiments similar to current issues in the U.S. context. Each week, students will participate in interactive classes that include discussion of readings, social science research skills practice, group work on case studies, guest speakers, and opportunities for written reflection. Students will also engage in fieldwork at one case study site.
