This course introduces students to the role of the DNP prepared nurse anesthetist. History of nurse anesthesia provides context for examining contemporary issues facing the discipline. Legal, regulatory, and scope of practice parameters form a basis and facilitate a comprehensive understanding of political, economic, social and professional issues relevant to nurse anesthesia practice. Professional practice models, the business of anesthesia practice management and relevant aspects of healthcare finance are presented. Importance of provider wellness is emphasized and the risk of substance use disorder is discussed. Individual career development options are reviewed with the goal of identifying an individual trajectory.
