This course introduces students to the field of sociology and covers some of its most essential concepts, theories, and methods. Special attention will be paid to understanding social structure and its role in shaping individual and population outcomes and life chances. This course will cover a range of topics that may include family, work, education, politics, medicine, crime, religion, media, and social change. This course satisfies the social science core and is open to a range of students from any major. However, SOCY1001 is also designed as a gateway to the sociology major and minor.
