In the BC F1RST Residential Seminar, students will examine factors that influence access to higher education in the US, including the power of social hierarchies to determine inequalities of material resources, psychological resources, and access. By reading works of first-gen scholars, we will encounter their talent, ingenuity, and insight. We will analyze their experiences, compare them to our own, and consider the value, impact, and purpose of higher education. Through group discussions and personal reflection, students in this seminar will gain increased knowledge and critical skills that will provide a solid foundation for future academic excellence.
