AADS2600 · African and African Diaspora Studies
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
This course explores the contours of Black cities, communities, and places from a social sciences perspective in the United States and Brazil. It examines how they are created, transformed, and redefined over time and space. What are chocolate cities, Black towns, and quilombos? Where are they located? How are they formed, maintained, and dismantled? How do they resemble and differ from one another? How do they influence ideas about community, politics, and play? This course addresses these questions by drawing insights from Black studies, sociology, geography, anthropology, history, and related fields.
