Historically, glial cells were thought to be mere space-fillers in the brainsimply its "glue." However, we now recognize that these cells play essential roles in nervous system development and function, including regulating brain wiring, modulating synaptic transmission, and controlling blood flow. This course provides an in-depth exploration of glial cells, with a focus on astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes, while also covering other glial cell types. We will examine both the physiological and pathological functions of glia, particularly their contributions to neurological and psychiatric disorders. Each topic will begin with a broad overview, followed by in-depth study and discussion of primary literature. Through student projects, we will further investigate how glial cells contribute to various disorders, fostering a deeper understanding of their critical roles in brain health and disease.
