About this course

Critical International Law is an examination of how international law historically developed, beginning with an overview of the orthodox narrative (provided in most international law textbooks) before turning to a more critical assessment. Instead of being a neutral and equitable system of governance, international law has colonial and Eurocentric origins, and that has consequences for how the system legitimizes and reproduces the subordination of less-developed states by the West. The course also examines different lenses by which we can consider how international law affect the behavior of states or the lived experiences of humans under different circumstances. For example, does the prohibition on the use of force or threats of force actually deter states? Does the supposed possession of human rights make a difference to refugees lives?
