SPAN6635 · Romance Languages and Literatures
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
Conducted in Spanish. Fulfills Post-1800 Peninsular requirement for HS majors: 6000-level elective for HS minors. This course explores queer lives in twentieth century Spain across periods of dictatorship, democratic transition and social transformation. We analyze literature, film, and art by creators like Federico Garcia Lorca, Luis Cernuda, and Pedro Almodovar, examining how queer artists navigated censorship and created communities from Franco's repression to La Movida Madrilena's exuberance. Through engagement with primary sources-poetry, novels, films, and underground publications-we investigate how sexuality intersected with broader questions of Spanish identity politics, and culture. Special attention will be given to aesthetic strategies used to articulate forbidden desires and how these cultural expressions contributed to Spain's social evolution.
