Prof. Kern is closed-minded in his discussion and will grade papers based on opinion, not necessarily on the writing itself. He shoots down any thoughts that are "out of the box" which is absurd for a poetry class. I find him to me a terrible teacher and a jerk, at that. Do Not Recommend!
I graduated in 1998, but I remember Prof. Kern being, as the previous reviewer said, very enthusiastic, if a bit unstructured. I enjoyed his classes and thought he graded fairly.
Ohhhh....why are these ratings so mean?? His interest in what he's teaching is wonderful. I found him very nice, helpful, & enthusiastic about students' ideas. Certainly there was some lack of structure but, come on, it's an English class - lots of freeform discussion. I found his grading & comments on papers fair & thoughtful.
This class was painful: boring, BORING, BORING. He speaks in monotone, relies on students to structure the class with their comments (except never gives any critique of what they say), and grades the papers pretty harsh (it's fairly easy to get a B, but difficult to get an A). He just sucks. Take someone else.

Incredibly disorganized. Very knowledgeable and a good person. If you can get over his lack of organization, you will enjoy his classes.

Just rambles and never gets through all the material. He's very unclear about what he expects. Unapproachable and a tough marker. Not recommended.
