AMAZING professors, he makes class so engaging and interesting. Participation matters but he opens the floor to answering questions and gives out index cards to answer in class questions. Exams are VERY specific so get ready to memorize everything he says. Final is optional if you do well on the semester exams.
Professor Gonzalez is a great lecturer and clearly passionate about the material. However, his exams are overly difficult, with confusing or poorly written questions. Participation is very strictly graded and counts for 15%, even though it's a lecture-based class.
THE best biology courses I've taken. Prof. Gonzalez-Rosa treats you like a scientist: A great portion of the lecture and exams are interpreting data from published papers, designing experiments using techniques we've learned, reasoning what you would expect under hypothetical conditions, etc. Some genetics and cell biology involved. Optional final!
