Professor Bento knows a lot and pushes you forward. He's a great person and mentor and is there to help you. He has amazing insights that you can learn a lot from. He is, by far, my favorite professor at BC.
Best (and favorite) professor I had at BC, no contest. Worked with him on my thesis—he trusts you to tackle hard problems and develop your own ideas, but always has sharp insight when you need it. Brilliant teacher too. Cares about his students as people more deeply than any professor I've encountered. Truly rare mentor. Work with him if you can!
Prof. Bento is intense in the best possible way. He is incredibly available outside of class and if you are stuck, he often gives you a roadmap way more detailed than the one you were hoping for. I learned a lot in a short amount of time about how to build systems that actually work. Demanding, but "garbage in, garbage out" as they say.
Knows a lot about the subject. Go to him during office hours helps a lot! Don't be intimidated by the topics and you would be fine. We did not have homeworks.
Professor Bento explains complex ML concepts clearly, helps us design projects that build real-world skills, and gives thoughtful, actionable feedback. They're incredibly helpful in office hours and serve as a genuine mentor even outside of class. I left with stronger technical skills, clearer guidance for my goals, and projects I'm proud of.
I took an independent study with Prof. Bento and learned a lot from our weekly discussions. He offered strong research insights and helped me grow technically through the work. He's always there when you need help. The workload wasn't light, but it was fair. Overall, a very rewarding experience.
Some of these reviews read like they've been written by bots...Prof Bento puts little effort into making his lectures structured (constant erasing and notational changes). There was 0 feedback given on assignments and project milestone feedback was infrequent and often received late. We covered ~50% of the syllabus...do not take this class.
The course was organised in a very stimulating way. The lectures were clear and detailed, and we had the opportunity to work on a semester long group project on a topic related to Machine Learning. This allowed to develop Machine Learning skills and apply them on a topic of interest. The feedbacks on our work were frequent and incredibly precise.
Bento told us to work daily even with no written final or midterms. There was a project & final oral exam. I wish I had taken him seriously. I did well on the project but bad on the oral because I didn't known I didn't know. I heard those going to office hours weekly aced the oral. No surprise! I was dumb: Bento's course is not other CS courses.
I took an independent study with Professor Jose Bento a few years ago. I learned quite a bit. However, he is very demanding, but it was worth it. Expect to spend lots of hours working to keep up with his to-do lists, if you work with him. As a result of this course, he wrote me a reference letter, which was good and helped me in my career.
Bento is very smart and intimidating. He explains things clearly, I guess.
I did not understand a good portion of material. To be fair, because I would not ask questions in class or go to office hours. He does give opportunities to ask questions and meet in person/zoom.
He warned in day 1that daily study was a must,I wish I had taken it serious.
This is was not for a regular lecture class but a study with Prof. Bento.
I learned very very much. Prof. Bento dedicated lots of his time to our project.
He was extremely demanding, and I can now understand why he takes so few students for this kind of 1-on-1 and why he was also reluctant to work with me at first. But in the end, it all worked !
It was a very hard class. Sometimes Bento speaks very fast and is hard to understand. However, he is willing to pause the lecture as many times as necessary to clarify things. He is super available to help outside class, but he will not solve homework for you. If you come to office hours without an honest question you will just get silence.
he is much harder than other profs at BC and CS bluntly fair not forgiving in terms of exceptions etc. however, he is super available to help and he pushed me to learn a lot
