Nature is beautiful but also terrifying. Ecohorror as a genre unravels the existential fear that nature is trying to kill us. How does ecohorror reflect our anxieties about mortality? About climate change? Is nature fighting back after decades of environmental exploitation by humans? We will study literary narratives and popular horror films to explore our fears about nature. Examining ecohorrors, thrillers, and mysteries, such as Frankenstein, Mexican Gothic, The Moonof the Crusted Snow, and movies like Snowpiercer, 2012, and The Shape of Water, we will attempt to articulate if horror as a framework offers mere catharsis or a genuine way to mend our relationship with nature -- an act that is urgently needed now more than ever.
